Howard Watson Trail Ride

A 16-kilometre trail on an old train line, flat the whole way because trains don't do hills. Bike or walk as far as you like, from the middle of Sarnia out past ponds and prairie toward Camlachie, then turn around.

What a grown-up does

Someone to ride with. The trail crosses roads, and it's easy to go farther out than you can get back.

Why it's like that

Trains can't climb much of a slope, so railway builders cut and filled the land until it was nearly level. When the trains stopped running in 1967, that flat, straight corridor was already perfect for a trail. Sarnia opened it in 1982, named after the councillor who pushed for it.

Lambton County twist

Some of the prairie along the trail is tallgrass prairie, which once covered huge parts of southern Ontario and is now one of the rarest habitats in Canada. This strip survives because the railway kept it from being ploughed.
